Daughter got head lice. Lindane only killed hatched bugs, not nits. Do the natural oil remedies work?
Dr. prescribed Lindane which is poison. I don't want to use any more poison on my 6 year old. I've looked on-line at alternatives. Do the oil and enzyme treatments work? I have killed the few hatched bugs, but the nits are incredibly difficult to get out of the hair and the poison doesn't penetrate the casing and kill them. There has to be a better solution. Supposedly the enzymes attack the nit (egg) glue and they wash right out. Makes sense to me if I get rid of the nits, then no more can hatch. HELP!
You could try Tea Tree Oil. It does kill lice but doesn't kill the nits. You need to reapply the treatment every 5 to 10 days to kill the nits that have hatched. It is recommended that you do about 3 treatments. Try to comb out as many nits as possible with a comb designed for that purpose. Don't forget to wash everything in hot water & put it in the dryer (clothes, bedding, headwear, jackets, pillows, stuffed animals, etc.) You can also put things into the freezer, not exactly sure how long things need to be frozen but would think about 10 days. Try adding 7 drops of tea tree oil to the regular shampoo you use. Some people will try combing the tea tree oil directly into the hair & scalp, but it is very drying to the skin & hair so you may need to use a good conditioner if you do this. Some parents rub a few drops of tea tree oil along the hairline especially behind the ears & the neck area as a preventitive, don't actually know if it works but have had a few moms swear that it does.

try tea tree oil!!! you can get a bottle of it at wal-mart for about $5. it kills the bugs AND the nits. you will still need to spend the time to pull the nits off of the hair, but they will be dead. also use tea tree oil shampoo. we use it exclusively. you can get paul mitchell from most drug stores, etc. or "generic" brand from sally beauty supply.

i am a professional nitpicker in NJ and i have helped 100s of families eliminate headlice and nits over the years: Comb out is the only way to go- get a good finetooth metal comb like Licemeister/ Terminator/Licender. Smother hair with a thick conditioner. Take thin sections hair and comb the hair out, strand by strand. 3-4 thorough comb-out would eliminate lice and nits permanently. this is the safest and surest method. also watch video @ http://www.headlice.org about how to do the comb-out. good luck!
PS- stay away from the chemicals
